The Armed Forces of the Philippines has forged a partnership with the United Nations (UN), with the AFP committing to help address problems related to illegal drugs and crime while respecting human rights.
A statement of cooperation between the military and the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) was signed on December 12, 2022 at the AFP headquarters in Camp Aguinaldo, according to UN Resident Coordinator Gustavo Gonzales.
Gonzales stated on Twitter that “terrorism and transnational organized crime pose security challenges for human development.”
The alliance “solidifies our contribution to create a cohesive, safe, and resilient societies, including our own,” according to AFP chief Lt. Gen. Bartolome Vicente Bacarro.
By working together, Bacarro added, “we can strengthen our commitment to the promotion and realization of human rights, particularly the protection of children, gender equality, and youth and women’s empowerment, as well as toward professionalism and respectable security sector governance.”
